A social app that focuses on human-centred design

In 2024, Social for Good set out to a social app that focuses on human-centred design. Most of the world population is covered by a mobile-broadband signal, but blind spots remain. Being a top priority for Android in 2024, the project goal was to enable people to reach emergency services via satellite even when there is no cellular coverage. As Design lead, I drove the end-to-end design process, establishing the UX strategy and design foundation.

As UX lead, I defined and led 4+ workstreams, driving the 0→1 design and establishing the strategy moving forward.

Overview

Most of the world population is covered by a mobile-broadband signal, but blind spots remain. Being a top priority for Android in 2024, the project goal was to enable people to reach emergency services via satellite even when there is no cellular coverage.

Some stats

◎ 14% of the US has zero cell coverage.

◈ Each year, over 10,000 search and rescue incidents occur in national parks.

◇ The average phone is only reliably connected about 80% of the time.

Prototyping in uncharted territories...

One of the challenges from the get-go was figuring how to create a realistic prototype to test with users. With some clever hacks, I created an interactive prototype with Protopie that uses the actual accelerometers on the device to simulate the pointing experience.
